RESEARCH

mariele neudecker

My work deals with questions around placement, collective experience and memory. I am enquiring most of the time via the subject of landscapes or maps – often going back into the early 19 th century and the Northern European Tradition in Painting. For a period of about 10 years I have been making a lot of ‘tank’ pieces which developed into some kind of ‘signature’ work. They depicted scenes either imagined or more closely related to specific paintings. The sky and atmospheric conditions would be then re-created by chemical mixtures and different layers of those.

I am very interested in ‘the experience’ and how we hold on, re-create and memorize experiences. What my work hopefully offers is space for a very particular brand of ‘nostalgia’ and the potency of ‘imagined experience.’

Film and video have also been part of my practice since over 10 years. I have collaborated with Opera North Projects on two works that used ’Winterreise’ (Schubert) and more recently ‘Kindertotenlieder’ (Mahler) as starting points for moving image installations and life performance.
