Doctoral Study

Bath School of Art and Design has a growing community of research students. The MPhil or PhD qualification is one which is increasingly necessary for high level practice, teaching posts and work in industry. We welcome applications from well qualified individuals to join communities of researchers and research students in the following areas:

  • Contemporary Art
  • Ceramics
  • Fashion and Textiles

The majority of our doctoral students combine a thorough understanding of theory in their chosen area with practice-based investigations, although we also have the expertise to supervise purely theoretical studies. Practice-based studies usually include an exhibition or visual component as well as a written thesis for examination.

Examples of recent projects
  • Integrated HD Video Production -  integrating the various stages of  video production for flexible forms of distribution and consumption.
  • Displaced Topology of Power in a Rural Environment - a visual exploration of World War 2 sites in rural and coastal locations.
  • Blurring the edges between the real and virtual mutable surfaces for ambiguous spaces - the use of digital media for surface design in collaborations between art and architecture.

Further Information

You will join a group of staff researchers and research students who have common concerns and approaches. Supervisors are drawn from research clusters to ensure that you have the most appropriate support for your study. We will arrange a meeting between you and a potential supervisor at the earliest possible point in your application process.  Processing of your application will be handled by the University’s Graduate School. Please refer to their website for details of how to apply.

Doctoral students benefit from regular research seminars, both in the School and provided by the Graduate School. Full-time practice-based students are allocated a studio space in the most appropriate department and there is a social space and computing facilities specifically for post-graduate students.
