RESEARCH

Sandra Symes (Fine Art Phd)

My practice is an exploration of our multiple senses of place. The work combines images and texts from a range of sources. Mostly I work through the medium of digital print and the book, more recently film and the internet. Exhibitions include ‘wayfarers’ and '11 Stations' at Spike Open Studios and 'Dreaming Japan; at the ICIA. Digital short film ou-topos was shown for 'Architecture Week' at the Watershed  and a virtual book was created for the CTOL website.

I am currently exploring the link between art, the sea, sites of time and pilgrimage in a Fine Art PhD. The PhD analyses the interplay between the ancient island of Naoshima and contemporary art practice. The thesis investigates on the interdepency of art practice and the material, spatial practice and material agency and draws on Heidegger , Lefebvre, De Certeau and Serres.
