Historical and Critical Studies

Being able to place your work in its proper historical and contemporary context is an essential aspect of your development as a confident, independent practitioner. You will be supported in this throughout your course by a range of contextual studies teaching delivered by staff in the Department of Historical and Critical Studies. This will help you to understand the conditions in which visual practices exist and provide you with the skills necessary for deeper knowledge through specialist research.

While some parts of contextual studies teaching will be specific to your course, others are taught in common with other courses which allows for the lively interchange of ideas between disciplines. Approaches to learning including lectures, seminars and individual tutorials supported by visits where appropriate.

You will work with your tutors to design projects for assessment that reflect your own interests and specialism. This increasing autonomy culminates at the third level with the 'Final Study', a major piece of work that you will have proposed, researched and completed supported by your tutors. The outcome of this project may be in a written or other form by negotiation with your tutor.

In addtion to the normal pattern of study, where you will be undertaking one (20 credit) module at each level of study, you may opt for a route that sees you undertaking a double weighting of 40 credits per year in contextual studies at levels 2 and 3 of your course.
