research methodologies
To support your main area of post-graduate study, you will take one module which focuses on the research methods and major contextual issues that underpin your practice. It has become increasingly important that designers and artists understand the relationship of research to practice and are able to apply appropriate methods. Post-graduate programmes are now recognised as a route into doctoral study for which you will need a high level of mastery of research methods and processes. Increasingly also, entry into teaching in Higher Education requires research experience. For those who intend to use their practice to develop viable businesses, the skills and knowledge to enable you to research markets, users and competitive environments is essential.
The research methods module on your post-graduate programme will introduce you to the processes of research and also to the main methods employed in the different disciplines within the art and design field. The module will begin with a focus on the use of libraries, archives and museums as sources of research material. You will be introduced to writers in key areas of critical theory, history of art and design and cultural studies. The module also deals with the practical issues of research processes both in the context of post-graduate study and in your role as an entrepreneur. There will also be an opportunity to consider the role of visual enquiry as a research method which supports your practice.
