MA Design: Ceramics
This is a programme which promotes independent, self-directed study in a creative environment and a student’s work is defined through an individual negotiated agreement. Student practice may encompass a range of material and object based concerns which develop from a critical awareness of current activity in the relevant aspects of Ceramics, and will establish a theoretical framework to set the work in context.
The teaching is through lectures, visits, individual tutorials and group critiques and students will keep a learning record of their intellectual and practical progress. Students have opportunities to present visual or written work-in-progress and there is a final exhibition. 1 year full time, 2 years part time.
Full time students are provided with individual work spaces and access to dedicated workshops with specialist technical support.
Distance Learning Version
From September 2006-7 students have the opportunity to take some or all of the modules on this course via computer-based distance learning. This approach uses the university's Minerva Virtual Learning Environment (VLE); a simple-to-use system that can be accessed from home using a standard web browser. Students learn through a combination of lecture materials, group seminars and individual tutorials, all delivered online.
The diet of modules that students receive on the VLE route is identical to that on the campus based route described above. Students receive 'lectures' during the teaching semester, together with opportunities to take part in online seminar discussions with their peer group and with tutors. Students are also provided with online tutorials and with supplementary materials such as bibliographies, reading and illustrations to support studies. The exact pattern of activities varies from module to module, and is described and explained in a handbook that accompanies each of them.
In addition to learning via VLE, students attend the university for study visits (typically, once per semester) where they have the opportunity to meet other students and their tutors face-to-face.
The Department is part of School of Art & Design which provides a stimulating community of activity and research across the disciplines and also offers both practice and theory based PhDs.
